What it feels like

Small spots, threads, or cobweb-like shapes drifting in your vision (floaters), sometimes accompanied by brief flashes of light, especially in peripheral vision.

Possible causes

Normal aging changes in the vitreous (the gel-like substance in the eye), but can also signal more serious issues like a retinal tear or detachment.

Why it matters

While floaters are often harmless, a sudden increase in floaters or flashes can be a warning sign of a retinal problem and should be checked promptly to protect your vision.
